Ankle Sprain
An ankle sprain is an injury that occurs when the ligament that holds the ankle bone together is over-stretched or torn usually occurs when the ankle twists or turns in an unusual way.
Symptoms
● Pain when weight or pressure is applied to the affected leg
● Swelling
● Bruising (Skin discoloration)
● Restricted range of motion
● Instability in the ankle
● Tenderness (pain or discomfort when an affected area is touched)
Symptoms:-

Causes
An ankle sprain occurs when the foot suddenly twists or turns to force the ankle joint out of its normal position usually during physical activities.
● Walking or exercising on an uneven surface
● Falling or tripping ( losing balance )
● Landing incorrect after a jump
● Sports that involve rolling or twisting foot such as football, basket, etc
Grading of ankle Sprain on the basis of severity
1. Grade1 – In this, the ligament is slightly stretched and micro tear may be present the patient experience mild pain, swelling, and tenderness but does not show any sign of bruising, difficulty wearing weight, or ankle instability
2. Grade2 – In this, the ligament is partially torn and the patient experiences moderate pain while walking, swelling, mild to moderate ankle instability, restricted range of motion, and bruising.
3. Grade3 – In this, the ligament is fully torn or ruptured and the patient experiences severe pain, swelling, tenderness, bruising, ankle instability, loss of range of motion, and unable to bear weight on the ankle.
Diagnosis of an ankle sprain through a special test
These tests are usually performed after 4-7 days post-injury when pain and swelling are settled down.
1. Anterior draw – test the ATFL
2. Talar tilt – test the CFL
3. Posterior draw – test the PTFL
Management of ankle Sprain
1. Ankle taping and bracing – used to help stabilize the joint by limiting motion and proprioception.
2. RICE protocol – provided within the first 24-48 hours of injury.
● Rest – To prevent worsening the injury the affected Part should be completely rested.
● Ice – Apply ice packs to reduce tissue metabolism and constrict the blood vessels. This physiological change slows and prevents further swelling, Ice also decreases the propagation of nociceptive neural stimuli to the brain which can reduce pain and muscle spasms.
● Compression- To control swelling an elastic bandage is used to provide a comfortable compression force without causing pain or constricting blood vessels to the point of occlusion
● Elevation- To reduce swelling elevate the affected ankle above the level of the heart by doing this the venous return to the systemic circulation is increasing, and the hydrostatic pressure is reduced thereby reducing edema and facilitating waste removal from the site of injury.
3. Electrotherapy – Modalities such as IFT, ultrasound, and laser therapy can be used with the aim to relieve pain, increase blood circulation, and promote tissue proliferation.
