Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy which is caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel present at the wrist joint. It is the most common neuropathy which accounts for 90% of all neuropathies. It usually occurs between ages 36 and 60 and is more common in women

Symptoms include pain, numbness, and paresthesias. These symptoms typically extend to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the radial half (thumb side) of the ring finger. Pain also can radiates in an upward direction in the affected arm. in late stages, hand weakness, decreased fine motor coordination, clumsiness, and thenar atrophy occurs.

ETIOLOGY

It results from the increased pressure within the carpal tunnel resulting subsequent compression of the median nerve. The most common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include

• genetic predisposition,
• history of repetitive wrist movements such as typing, or machine work
• obesity,
• autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and
• Pregnancy

CLINICAL PRESENTATION

• Tingling or numbness in the median nerve distribution of the affected hand.
• Aggravation of symptoms with static gripping of objects such as a phone or steering wheel but also at night or early in the morning
• An improvement of symptoms following shaking or flicking of their hand.
• As the condition worsens, the patient complains of burning pain.
• weakness and atrophy of muscles of the thenar eminence
