Neck Pain Treatment near me
we are going to discuss Neck Pain Treatment near me
Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional abnormal curvature of the spine which occurs when the spine rotates and curves sideways forming an S or C shape.
Structural vs Non Structural scoliosis
- Structural scoliosis –
- Is the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine with spinal rotation.
- In Adam’s forward bending test asymmetrical curvature can be observed
- It is permanent
- It is more severe and can worsen with time unless treated.
- It is caused by bone malformation before birth, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, traumatic injury, etc.
- Non structural scoliosis
- Also known as function scoliosis is the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine with no spinal rotation.
- In Adam’s forward bending test symmetrical curvature can be observed
- It is temporary
- It is less severe and can be fixed by treating the underlying cause.
- It is usually caused by muscle spasms, leg length discrepancy, bad posture etc.
Type of structural scoliosis
- Idiopathic scoliosis is a developmental disorder commonly found in infants to adolescents and it accounts for 80% of all cases. It is usually caused by genetic mutation and can be inherited from the family.
- Degenerative scoliosis also known as adult-onset scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine caused due to degeneration of the facet joint and intervertebral disc.
- Neuromuscular scoliosis is usually a complication of a neuromuscular condition such as muscular dystrophy, Spina bifida, etc, and progresses very rapidly unless treated.
- Congenital scoliosis is an embryological malformation of the vertebrae resulting in sideways curvature of the spine due to irregular growth rates of different segments of vertebrae.
Symptoms
- Trouble breathing
- Uneven alignment of the shoulder and pelvic
- Limited range of motion of the spine
- Abnormal walking pattern
- Pain
- Stiffness
- One side scapula stuck out
Causes of scoliosis
- Muscle spasm
- Cerebral palsy
- Muscular dystrophy
- Tumor or infection of spine
- Birth defect
- Genetic
Diagnosis
- Adam forward bending test – In this test the patient is asked to remove his shirt and then the patient bend forward with the arm hanging downward the therapist observe for asymmetrical curvature
- Cobb angle – Is the angle formed by the intersection point of the perpendiculars of the parallel lines to the upper and lower plate of the curve-limiting vertebrae.
- Normal – less than 10°
- Mild – between 10 – 20°
- Moderate – between 20-40°
- Severe – more than 40°
Treatment
- Bracing – if the person is still in growth phase bracing can be used to prevent the condition from worsening
- Physical therapy – through stretching and strengthening exercises the therapist helps restore the ROM, correct posture, improve respiratory capacity, etc.
Exercise
- Pelvic tilt
- Superman
- Cat cow
- Bird dog
- Latissimus dorsi stretch
- Abdominal press
