Treatment of any orthopaedic condition is divided into three phases :
- Phase 1 – Emergency care
- Phase 2 – Definitive care
- Phase 3 – Rehabilitation
PHASE 1 – EMERGENCY CARE
This phase is applied at the site of the accident.
In this phase, RICE protocol is applied, which means
R – rest
I – icing
C – compression
E – elevation
The rest of the part may be done by splinting.
Immediate application of ice to the injured part is proven to reduce pain and swelling due to any injury.
Crepe bandage helps best in compression
PHASE 2 – DEFINITE CARE
In this phase, the treatment is done by the nonoperative method. In this, the injured part is immobilized whereas the joints nearby the injured part are mobilized for maintaining mobility.
PHASE 3 – REHABILITATION
Rehabilitation begins at the time of injury, and it goes on till one regains the maximum possible functions. It consists of joint mobilization, muscle re-education exercises, and instructions regarding gait training.
Joint mobilization is done either actively I.e. by the patient himself or passively when someone else does it for the patient.
Muscle re-education is very important because of lack of use, muscles get wasted quickly. The joints are moved to maintain the natural range of motion.
