Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is an overuse injury that occurs when the tendon around the elbow joint becomes inflamed.

Symptoms

Pain around the elbow joint worsens after waking up or during activities.
Burning sensation
Weakness
Tenderness
Swelling

Causes

Tennis elbow occurs when a specific muscle in the forearm (Extensor carpi radialis brevis ) is damaged which helps in extending the wrist. Any activity that involves repetitive twisting of the wrist can cause tennis elbow such as

Playing tennis
Swimming
Frequently using computer

Diagnosis

Cozen’s test – In this test the patient dorsiflex the wrist joint while the therapist provides resistance if the patient experiences pain in the lateral epicondyle the test is considered positive.
Maudsley’s test – In the test the therapist palpates the lateral epicondyle while resisting the extension of the third finger. The test is considered positive if the patient experiences pain in the lateral epicondyle.
Mills test – In this test the therapist palpates the lateral epicondyle while the patients pronate the forearm, extends the elbow if the patient experiences pain around the lateral epicondyle then the test is considered positive.

Management

RICE protocol – provided within the first 48 hours with the aim to prevent the injury from worsening, and reduce swelling and pain.
Braces or splints – over the forearm help stabilize the muscle and tendon.
Electrotherapy
Ultrasound – emits a high frequency of sound waves inside the tissue with the aim to reduce inflammation and promote recovery.
IFT – emits a medium frequency of current with the aim to reduce pain and stimulate the muscle.
Exercise Therapy – specialized stretching and strengthening program designed by the therapist can be performed which aims to increase ROM, reduce stiffness and strengthen muscles to reduce the chances of future injury.
