Causes
Herniated disc is an age-related condition caused by wear and tear of the intervertebral disc ( degeneration disc ). Apart from age certain other factors that can cause a herniated disc

Diagnosis
Cervical
- Spurling test – In this test the patient turns his head to the affected side and the therapist extends the head backward and applies downward force the test is considered positive if the patient experiences pain.
- Distraction test – In this test the patient lies in a supine position the therapist applies traction force if the pain diminishes the test is considered positive.
- Shoulder abduction test – In this test the patient places his hand on top of his head if the pain diminishes the test is considered positive.
Lumbar
- SLR test – In this test the patient lies in a supine position and raises his leg first the unaffected leg then the affected leg if the patient experiences pain then the test is considered positive.
- Bowstring test – In this test the patient lies in a supine position and flexes his hip and knee joint the therapist presses the popliteal fossa if the patient experiences pain then the test is considered positive.
- Prone knee bending – In this test the patient lies in a prone position and flexes his knee. The therapist holds the position at the end range of motion for 30 seconds. If the patient experiences pain (unilateral area) then the test is considered positive.
