Stress Fracture treatment near me
Stress Fracture treatment near me, Spondylolysis is a unilateral or bilateral stress fracture in the pars interarticularis of the vertebrae. It can result in the slipping of vertebrae and the term is called spondylolisthesis.
Clinical relevance
The vertebrae are made up of 2 segments: the body and the vertebral arch. The arch is formed by a pair of lamina and pedicle, the area between the lamina and pedicle is called pars interarticularis and it is one of the weakest parts of the vertebral arch. In spondylolysis, pars interarticularis is affected.
Symptoms
- Abnormal gait pattern
- Pain associated with movement such as extension and rotation of lumbar vertebrae.
- Pain radiating from the lower back to the buttock or proximal lower limb.
- Postural deformities
Causes
Spondylolysis is a stress fracture that is caused due to mechanical stress. It occurs due to repeated load rathan than a single traumatic blow.
Differential diagnosis – radio imaging such as MRI, X-ray, etc should be done to rule out other possible causes of back pain and to provide an accurate treatment procedure. A condition related to back pain.
- Spondylolisthesis
- Disc herniation
- Spinal Stenosis
- Osteomyelitis
- Sacroiliac joint injury
- Sprain and strain injury
Diagnosis of spondylolysis
Micheli’s test – In this test the patient stands on one leg while hyperextending the back if the symptom reproduces the test is considered positive.
Treatment
- Rest – taking rest helps take the stress off the injured area allowing a natural healing process thus it’s important to avoid any movement that stresses out the vertebrae such as rotation.
- Laser therapy and ultrasound – low power laser therapy and ultrasound are highly effective in fracture healing. The laser emits protons while ultrasound emits high-frequency sound waves which once absorbed stimulate chain reactions that directly or indirectly helps in bone remodeling by increasing capillary formation, calcium deposition, increase callus formation, etc.
- Stabilization – neuromuscular stabilization techniques such as activation of core muscle along with postural training can help reduce pain by stabilizing the structure.
- Stretching exercises – paraspinal muscle spasm, tight hamstring, and hypomobility of the spine is often found in spondylolysis patient stretching can help increase flexibility.
- Brace – back brace can be worn to limit the movement of the spine and provide support.
Exercise
- Pelvic tilt
- Crunches
- Knee to chest
- Hamstring stretch
- Multifidus activation
