Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes
Introduction:-
Gestational diabetes or gestational diabetes mellitus is the first time recognition of elevated glucose levels during pregnancy.
This can be controlled by eating healthy food, exercising, meditating, and taking proper medication. Symptoms of gestational diabetes are the same as that of diabetes mellitus.
This type of diabetes can be controlled during the pregnancy phase and it has no longer side effects. Doing proper exercises as prescribed by a trained physiotherapist can do wonders in these cases.
A physiotherapist plans an appropriate protocol of treatment for the mother which is easier to do and is beneficial for the growing fetus.
DIET AND EXERCISES ARE YOUR FRIENDS :
As with all forms of diabetes, diet and exercise can help you gain the upper hand.
With gestational diabetes, maintaining a balanced diet is an integral part of one’s life.
WHAT CAUSES GESTATIONAL DIABETES?
Gestational diabetes occurs when your body can’t make enough insulin during your pregnancy.
Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into the cells in your body for use as energy.
During pregnancy, your body makes more hormones and goes through other changes, such as weight gain.
These changes cause your body’s cells to use insulin less effectively a condition called insulin resistance which in turn increases your body’s need for insulin.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS of Gestational diabetes.
Most of the signs and symptoms of gestational diabetes are silent.

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND WHILE EXERCISING –

Wear comfortable footwear.
Take frequent breaths in between the exercises
Types of exercises

It is recommended that women with GDM should do both resistance and aerobic exercises at a moderate intensity.
SAFETY TIPS FOR EXERCISING DURING PREGNANCY –
Avoid activities that involve physical contact or a high risk of falling.
Avoid exercising in too warm or humid environments in the first trimester. The growing fetus cannot regulate its temperature.
Avoid holding your breath for too long as this places stress on the pelvic floor.
Avoid doing exercises laying on your back after the fourth month of pregnancy.
Avoid being still in the same position for a long period of time as it may lower your blood pressure.
During pregnancy, hormones become more relaxed. Sudden changes in movement or bouncing should be done in a controlled manner.
Avoid too many one-sided exercises like walking lunges or single-leg step-ups in the third trimester.
Treatment for Gestational Diabetes
You can do a lot to manage your gestational diabetes. Go to all your prenatal appointments and follow your treatment plan, including:
checking your blood sugar to make sure your levels stay in a healthy range
Eating healthy food in the right amounts at the right times. Follow a healthy eating plan created by your doctor or dietitian.
Being active. Regular physical activity that’s moderately intense lowers your blood sugar and makes you more sensitive to insulin so your body won’t need as much.
Monitoring your baby. Your doctor will check your baby’s growth and development.
