Speech Impairment

People who have problems in speaking or talking in a normal tone, voice, or tempo have speech impairments that make them harder to communicate. Speech impairment can affect both children and adults in different ways. People with speech impairments have trouble pronouncing different words for example distorting some words or leaving the sounds completely.

Children who develop speech impairment might carry that to adult years whereas speech impairments can occur post-trauma or certain medical ailments like stroke, Parkinson’s, etc.

Speech impairments can be of 3 types:

  • Fluency disorder.

In this, an individual is involved in the unusual repetition of sounds or rhythm.

  • Voice disorder. This is consists of an atypical tone of voice for example abnormal pitch, quality, resonance, or volume.
  • Articulation disorder.  In this, an individual suffers from distorting certain sounds or fully omitting the sounds.
  • Types of Speech Impairments
    • Childhood apraxia

This occurs during the initial phases of infants when they/re trying to speak. In this, there is a mismatch between brain signals and mouth so kids are unable to move their lips and tongue in a normal way which is required to speak.

  • Dysarthria
  •  This muscle of speech is weak so words don’t form completely.
    • Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD).

This is characterized as the abnormal use of facial muscles. Individuals with OMD also suffer from breathing difficulty through the nose.

    • Speech sound Disorders.

Speech sounds impairment is normal in toddlers but after the age of 4-5 years, they’re considered abnormal. Speech sounds disorders are also seen in post-stroke patients.

    • Stuttering. Stuttering is repeating words or sounds like “uh” and “um” (disfluencies) involuntarily.
    • Voice.  Voice loss can occur after a chronic cough or paralysis of the vocal cords.
