Ganglion Cyst

• A ganglion cyst also known as a bible cyst is a minor cystic swelling filled with mucin.
• It is very common in women and occurs in 70% of people between the age of 20-40
• It rarely occurs in children below the age of 10 years
• The commonest sites of ganglion cysts are on the back of the hand, at the wrist joint, palm side of the wrist.
• Can become more predominant on the back of the wrist when flexed.
• Other less common sites include the base of the fingers, on the palm, fingertips just below the cuticle, outside the knee and ankle, and on top of the foot.
• They aren’t considered true cysts usually, they are formed due to synovial herniation, mucus cyst formation, degeneration of connective tissue, and cyst formation.

Clinical Features

• They are more common in females
• The size of the cyst shows variation with time
• They are intermittently painful, usually following acute or repetitive trauma
• Upto 35% of the cysts are without symptoms except for the appearance
• The pain caused by ganglion cysts is chronic and usually worsens by joint motion, the pain can be managed by Physiotherapy for ganglion cysts at DNPR
• If the cysts if connected to a tendon, the affected finger becomes weak
• It causes swelling on the dorsum of the wrist
• It is usually pea-sized
• It can be very firm or bony hard

Investigations

• An ultrasonography can confirm the presence of a cyst and also confirm whether it is fluid-filled or solid also it can detect whether there is an artery or blood vessel causing the lump.
