PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION

PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION

Introduction:-  Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation is the technique of stimulating the Proprioceptors for increasing the demand for neuromuscular mechanisms to obtain and facilitate their responses.

Treatment by this technique involves the application of principles of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.

The aim of this technique is to obtain the maximum quantity of activity which can be achieved at each voluntary effort and the maximum number of repetitions to facilitate the responses.

The physiotherapist requires both skills in the performance of technique and a thorough understanding of the method of treatment to obtain the best results from the patients.

Treatment by these techniques aims to summate the effects of facilitation to increase responses of neuromuscular mechanisms. Resistance and stretch are applied manually to working muscles to perform movements in a pattern and verbal commands are given to the patient for voluntary control.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular (PNF) TECHNIQUES:

  • Pattern of facilitation
  • Manual contact
  • The Stretch Reflex
  • Traction and Approximation
  • Commands to the patient
  • Normal timing
  • Maximal resistance
  • Re-Inforcement

PRINCIPLES:

  1. Repeated Contraction
  2. Slow reversal
  3. Rhythmic Stabilisation
  4. Hold-Relax
  5. Rhythmic Initiation

COMPONENTS OF MOVEMENT of Proprioceptive neuromuscular

Each pattern of movement has three components –
Two components are angular and the third one is rotatory.
INDICATIONS OF PNF :

  1. Weak postural muscles
  2. To increase strength, flexibility, and coordination of muscles
  3. Decreased range of motion
  4. Joint stiffness
  5. Difficulty in initiating movements
  6. Structural deformity
  7. Chronic pains
  8. Paraparesis

BENEFITS OF PNF:

  1. Increase range of motion
  2. Boost muscle flexibility
  3. Boost muscle strength
  4. Quicker recovery
  5. Better coordination
  6. Improved performance
