Physiotherapy and Ayushman Bharat
What PM-JAY does and does not cover for physiotherapy, and why the answer turns on whether you were admitted.
Quick answer
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is built around treatment packages at empanelled hospitals, and most of those packages are for admitted patients. Physiotherapy delivered as part of an admission — after a joint replacement, a fracture or a stroke, for example — generally sits inside the package. Standalone outpatient physiotherapy, where you were never admitted, is usually not covered. Dr Nasir Physiotherapy runs physiotherapy units across West and South West Delhi and can tell you what applies before anything starts.
Who PM-JAY covers
Eligibility under PM-JAY is not tied to employment. It is determined by criteria set nationally and by the state, and an eligible family is covered up to an annual limit for treatment at empanelled hospitals. Delhi’s position on implementation has changed over time, so confirm your current status rather than relying on what was true a few years ago.
Why the answer depends on whether you were admitted
PM-JAY pays against defined treatment packages, and the great majority of those packages are procedures requiring admission. Rehabilitation that forms part of such a package — the physiotherapy that follows a joint replacement or a stroke, during and immediately after the stay — is normally covered by it. Walking into a clinic with back pain and asking for the scheme to pay for ten outpatient sessions is a different question, and the usual answer is no.
What this means in practice
If you are being discharged after surgery or a stroke, ask the hospital what rehabilitation the package includes and for how long, because that is the window in which it is paid for. If the course needs to continue beyond it, you will usually be arranging that yourself — which is worth knowing while you are still an inpatient rather than afterwards.
What to have with you
Your Ayushman card and the discharge summary, which is the document that establishes what you were treated for and what the package covered. For any rehabilitation after surgery, the operation note matters more than anything else you can bring.
Why there is usually no desk to go to
For most schemes the question is which desk to start at. Under PM-JAY it is usually a different question, because the cover attaches to an admission rather than to a visit. If you are already an inpatient, the hospital arranges rehabilitation as part of the package and you will not have to organise anything. If you are not, and you are looking for outpatient physiotherapy, there is generally no route for the scheme to pay for it — which is better to know now than after a course has started.
Where we fit
Our physiotherapy units sit inside hospitals, and any empanelment belongs to the hospital rather than to us. That means the answer differs by centre, and it is not something to guess at from a website. Tell us which scheme you hold and where you are, and we will find out and tell you before anything starts.
We work in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri.
Check what your Ayushman Bharat cover means here
Scheme treatment is arranged through the hospital desk, not by booking a session — so leave your details rather than booking, and we will tell you where to start and what your cover is likely to mean. No payment, nothing to cancel.
We send a short code on WhatsApp to check the number is yours. Nothing is booked and nothing is charged.
