Physiotherapy and Health insurance
When a private policy pays for physiotherapy, when it does not, and the four things to check in yours.
Quick answer
Most private health policies in India are hospitalisation policies, and outpatient physiotherapy booked directly is usually excluded. Physiotherapy connected to a hospital admission is a different matter: treatment during a stay, and rehabilitation within the policy’s post-hospitalisation window, is commonly payable. Some policies add outpatient cover through an OPD rider. Check your own policy wording, because this varies more between insurers than any other scheme.
The hospitalisation link is the whole question
A standard indemnity policy pays for treatment that required you to be admitted. Physiotherapy you arrange yourself for back or knee pain, with no admission anywhere in the story, falls outside that and is normally excluded. Physiotherapy that follows an operation or an admission is usually inside it, because it is part of recovering from something the policy already paid for.
Pre- and post-hospitalisation windows
Most policies pay for defined periods before and after a hospital stay — commonly measured in days, and the exact numbers are in your wording. Rehabilitation after a joint replacement or a fracture frequently falls inside the post-hospitalisation window, which is one of the most under-claimed parts of a policy simply because people do not realise it applies to physiotherapy.
OPD riders, and what they are worth
Some insurers sell outpatient cover as an add-on. Where one exists it may cover physiotherapy, usually with a sub-limit and often on reimbursement rather than cashless. If you are facing a long course, it is worth reading what the sub-limit actually is before assuming it will absorb it.
Four things to check before you start
Whether your treatment is linked to an admission; how many days your post-hospitalisation window runs to; whether physiotherapy is named in your exclusions; and whether you are claiming cashless through a network or paying and seeking reimbursement. Those four answers determine everything else, and your insurer or TPA can give you all of them in one phone call.
The TPA desk, and when to involve it
Where a claim is possible it is handled between the hospital and your insurer or TPA, usually through the hospital's insurance desk rather than by the physiotherapy team. For treatment linked to an admission that desk is already involved. For anything you are arranging yourself after discharge, call your insurer before the first session and ask whether it falls inside your post-hospitalisation window — approval sought afterwards is a great deal harder to obtain than approval sought first.
Where we fit
Our physiotherapy units sit inside hospitals, and any empanelment belongs to the hospital rather than to us. That means the answer differs by centre, and it is not something to guess at from a website. Tell us which scheme you hold and where you are, and we will find out and tell you before anything starts.
We work in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri.
Check what your Health insurance cover means here
Scheme treatment is arranged through the hospital desk, not by booking a session — so leave your details rather than booking, and we will tell you where to start and what your cover is likely to mean. No payment, nothing to cancel.
We send a short code on WhatsApp to check the number is yours. Nothing is booked and nothing is charged.
